FEAR OF ENGLISH SPEAKING

How to face fear of Speaking English

Fear is, what stops us. Fear of trying something new. Fear of the unknown. Fear of being embarrassed. Fear of being judged.

Sometimes we have huge aspirations, big goals but we are afraid of failures, afraid of taking that big step, fear of taking a bold decision. Many of you are even afraid to leave the traditional method of learning English and join the Fearless Communication Tribe. You watch my videos, read my blogs, listen to my podcasts- but you are still afraid to leave your textbooks and learn English without pen and paper and Grammar.

Let’s look at some bigger fears, for instance starting a career, leaving a job to start an independent business, facing a job interview, are the big fears.

So today, I will not tell you, not to be afraid, to not to feel fear. That is done by everyone- parents, teachers.  Since we are in school, we are told to be afraid of low marks, be afraid of poor grades, be afraid of failure, to fear the risk, fear of the teacher not liking us, fear not being popular.

Even I felt a lot of fear. I was terrified by the idea of speaking in front of the camera. First time I faced the camera to make the first youtube video I was petrified.

So the point is, it’s OK to feel afraid, it’s OK to feel nervous. People think I am afraid, I may look stupid. I am afraid, I may speak the wrong English. I am afraid of using the wrong pronunciation. Fear is fine. Fear is normal. Fear is human.

It’s not the fear that’s the concern. The concern is that will you still “DO IT”? Even though you are scared are you still going to give it a try? Move forward?

Because that’s all that is required. So, if you are afraid to leave your grammar books if you are afraid to give up on those traditional methods of learning English and try my FLUENCY STEP-UP BLUEPRINT & TURBO ENGLISH MASTERY, it’s OK. The key is that keep trying. Don’t stop.

Because the best part is even if you fail you will realize that it was not that bad. It was not that awful.

I remember when I made my first YouTube video, I was literally shaking I didn’t do good I was not perfect. It was too bad. But, so what? Nobody made fun of me. Nobody said discouraging words to me, in fact, everyone boosted me. “That OK at least you tried”. My family members, my friends said that “It’s OK, go ahead.”

So today I share a few tips which will help you go ahead, even if you feel afraid of speaking English, it is perfectly fine to feel so.

1-  Believe in Yourself

Remember faith and fear are the two faces of the same coin. Success is always on the other side of fear. You need to believe in your potential before anyone else believes in your abilities. Your subconscious mind is thousands of times more powerful than your conscious mind. It controls 90% of your life. You just need to train your brain that,

“I can do it”,  “Today is my day”,  “I am the best”,  “ God is with me”,  “I am the winner”

These are the 5 powerful affirmations given by Dr. A.P. J. Abdul Kalam. And trust me they are magical. So believe in yourself.

2-  Change all your negative thoughts to positive thoughts

The human brain has a tendency not only to register negative stimuli more readily but also dwell on them. Psychologists refer to this as the Negative Bias also called Negativity Bias and it can have a powerful effect on your behaviours, your decisions, relationships, even your learning capacity.

So instead of doubting yourself negatively, positively affirm yourself.

For example:-

Can I do it?             How can I do it?

Is it possible?        Why? It is possible.

Will this work?       How will I make this work?

3-  Don’t Chase Perfection

Michael Jordan said, “I have failed over and over again and that is why I succeed.” He was one of the best basketball players of his time. He never won all his games. He never made all his shots. He never worried about his mistakes. He never tried to be perfect. All he cared about was his game and his practice and consistency. So be consistent in your efforts and perfection will follow.

4-  Rise like a phoenix

One very interesting way to celebrate your mistakes is to study the other people’s mistakes and how they never bothered about them and rose high in their careers, reached the pinnacle of success

Walt Disney

Fired from a newspaper for “lacking imagination and having no original ideas.”

Albert Einstein

“Did not speak until he was 4 years old and his teacher said he would never amount to much.”

The Beatles

“Rejected by Deca recording Studios who said’ “We don’t like their sound, they have no future in show business”

What they did in their lives, is a history.

5-  Practice and prepare

“One important key to self-confidence is preparation”, says Arthur Ashe, the American Professional Tennis player. To overcome your fear and become confident every time you speak in English, keep speaking more and more in English. Keep practicing and you are less likely to be afraid. So don’t wait for perfection keep speaking in English. When you practice less you start focusing on your mistakes. On the contrary, if you practice well and have already worked on your weak points, you would speak fluently without errors.

6-  “Do it”

The last and the most important is “Doing it.” As I always say, “Stop learning English, start using it. Stop studying English, start doing it.” Spoken English is a skill. You cannot learn a skill by just reading books, making notes, sitting with a pen and paper, relaxing on a chair. As you can’t learn swimming by reading books. You can’t learn bicycling by solving exercises. Similarly, you can’t speak English by just solving Grammar exercises or making vocabulary lists. You need to speak and you need to speak a lot, so speak English Fearlessly. If you want more English Speaking practice, Join my FLUENCY STEP-UP BLUEPRINT & TURBO ENGLISH MASTERY COURSE;
